Grace Doty Chats "Sunset Colors," Songwriting, and More with M.E.I. News
Grace recently sat down with M.E.I. News for an in-depth conversation about her new single "Sunset Colors," the story behind the song, her creative process, and what's on the horizon. The interview covers a lot of ground — from her musical upbringing and the artists who shaped her sound, to what it felt like to finally release music again after an eight-year hiatus.
On the inspiration behind "Sunset Colors"...
Grace shared that the song came to her while running on the beach around golden hour. She had been searching for the right way to capture the intensity and warmth of a relationship's honeymoon phase, and the image of a sunset became the perfect metaphor — a way to describe that deep, all-consuming connection
On finding her creative path...
After years of playing bar gigs, solo shows, and the competition circuit, Grace realized that writing, recording, and producing from her home studio in Connecticut is where she truly belongs. Letting go of the pressure to perform live opened up a new sense of creative freedom — one that lets her focus entirely on the art itself.
On the biggest lesson she's learned...
Trust the vision. Grace talked about how easy it is to defer to people with more experience, even when your gut tells you something isn't aligned. Protecting the creative vision — while still welcoming collaboration from people you respect — has been one of the most important lessons of this new chapter.
“I hope people listen to it and remember that feeling — that all-consuming, deeply connected kind of love.”
What’s next…
In the interview, Grace also teased what's ahead — a concept album chronicling a deeply personal story of first love, lessons, and loss. A few more singles will lead the way before the full project arrives later this year. "Sunset Colors" is just the opening chapter.
